Máté Winery

Mate is a boutique, organically certified winery located in the prestigious Montalcino-Santa Restituta area. Ferenc Mate and his wife Candace left New York in 1990 for the Tuscan countryside. In the world-famous Montalcino wine area, they purchased an ancient abandoned farm with a canyon, waterfalls and a 10th-century monastery with a tower and courtyard. Their neighbors were famous Italian winemakers Angelo Gaja and Gianfranco Soldera. A perfectionist, Mate restored the monastery to “museum quality” and hired the best to design their vineyards. Their success was immediate, as evidenced by numerous awards and high marks from world wine critics. Today the company owns 7 small vineyards of amazingly diverse terroir, covering a total area of 7 hectares, surrounded by Mediterranean forests.
