Seifried Estate

The Seifried family winery was founded in 1973 in the Moutere Valley. Austrian-born Hermann Seifried and his wife Agnes bought 2 hectares of clay soil in the Nelson region to fulfill the dream of Hermann, who was educated in Germany and gained winemaking experience in one of the largest corporations in South Africa - KWV. In 1976, the first five varietal wines appeared. At that time, wine was sold directly from the cellar and only by mail. After some time, the Seifried family acquired 2 more vineyards, which are located in Rabbit Island and in the Redwood Valley. Today, the company owns an area of 180 hectares, on which such varieties as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are grown. In 1993, in the middle of a vineyard on Hare Island, the Seyfried family built a restaurant, which soon became a very popular place for celebrations, weddings and other events. In 1996, the winery itself moved here with all its services and offices.
