La Malinche

Legend has it that as many years ago as the stars can see in the sky, a great storm overtook the Nahual people of Jalisco. One night the sky was covered with clouds, and lightning from the goddess Mayahuel herself struck the mezcals that had been burning for several days. When the storm passed, the inhabitants emerged into the light again, and the wind brought them the sweet aroma emanating from the burnt mezcal. It was a sweet, aromatic honey with an extraordinary, almost heavenly taste. After a few days, they realized that the blue agave plants produced a liquid with a completely different taste. This liquid became the official drink of ceremonies and celebrations.

When the Spanish colonizers arrived in Mexico, a local woman served Hernan Cortes as a translator, advisor and mediator. She showed him all her customs, including the popular drink of the gods. The Spanish settlers brought the distillation technique and its processes and applied it to fermented agave juice, thus distilling the first tequila.

La Malinche or "Malintzin" in Nahual is a Nahua woman from the Gulf of Mexico, considered one of the symbols of the country. La Malinche tequilas are produced in one of the legendary tequila houses of Jalisco with over 70 years of tradition and experience.
