Conde

The name “Quinta do Conde” has its origin in Manuel José do Conde, great-great-grandfather of the company’s current CEO and biggest shareholder, José Luís Oliveira da Silva.

Manuel José do Conde was born on the 5th April 1817 at Graciosa Island in the Azores. He is a descendant of 16th Century families who colonized the island.

In 1835, aged 18, he emigrated to Bahia, Brazil where he would build a great empire in the agricultural and food industry.

During several years, using his “Conde” fleet he imported from Portugal several products including wine.

Portuguese wine was bought in oak barrels to Joaquim Santos Lima, a great producer and exporter, who would later marry Eufrosina, Manuel do Conde's daughter.

Several years later he based himself in Lisbon, at “Paço de S. Cristóvão”, where we continued to manage his businesses at a distance.

Manuel José do Conde also invested in several properties in the Lisbon region, such as “Quinta do Conde” in Alenquer, neighboring the “Quinta da Boavista” - property of his daughter and son in law Joaquim Santos Lima and where wine had always been produced
