Chateau d'Armailhac

Château d'Armailhacq, owned by the Baron Rothschild family and having undergone many changes throughout its history, returned to the origins of its name at the end of the 20th century. The local land registry from 1680 mentions the Armaillac brothers, who owned land in Pauillac. There is also a reference to a descendant of the Armaillac brothers, who was engaged in the production of red wines at the family winery in 1750. At the end of the 18th century, the Château is recorded in the registers under the name "Darmailhacq". At that time, the estate consisted of 128 acres of land between Brane-Mouton (now known as Mouton Rothschild) and Pibran. The owner of the Château since 1844 was the wife of Mr. Joseph Odet Darmailhacq. In 1855, during the official classification, Château d'Armailhac was awarded the status of Fifth Grand Cru. In the same year of 1855, Armand d'Armailhac published a treatise on viticulture and winemaking in the Medoc. In 1878, Count Adrien de Ferrand, who married one of d'Armailhac's daughters, bought the Château, which by that time already owned 170 acres of land. In 1931, in order to further develop the Château, Count de Ferrand decided to attract investors and created a company of shareholders for this purpose, which included the young Baron Philippe Rothschild. After the death of the Count, Baron Rothschild continued the work and brought the Château to a high level. From 1947 to 1966, Chateau d'Armailhac, united with Mouton Rothschild, received a production base with huge outbuildings for storage and good technical equipment. All this helped Château d'Armailhac to consolidate its position and confirm the recognized quality of the wines of the Fifth Grand Cru. In 1989, Baroness Rothschild restored the historical name of the territory, renaming it back to Château d'Armailhac. The wine label depicts Bacchus from a painting by the 18th-century artist Nevers, kept in the Museum of Wine Art at Château Mouton Rothschild.
