Domaine Fouassier

Fouassier is one of 10 wineries located in the village of Sancerre, the heart of the AOC Sancerre. It is one of the oldest estates in the region, dating back to 1742. The estate owns 59 hectares of vineyards. Fouassier was the first in Sancerre to produce wines from individual vineyards, focusing on the terroir characteristics of each plot.

The vineyards of Domaine Fouassier are located on 4 unique terroirs: Bourges - a chalky terroir with a small proportion of stones. Under a shallow layer of soil there is a limestone layer. This terroir produces light and fruity wines. Buzancais - a rockier terroir, which is formed from limestone and clay marls of varying thickness. Wines from this terroir are exceptionally mineral and have great potential for aging. Saint Doulchard - marl Kimmeridgian soils are more clayey than rocky, poorly permeable to moisture. The clay layers are separated in certain places by limestone beds. These wines have the greatest potential for further aging. Siliceous pebbles with clay are the youngest geological formations, very common in the area around the village of Sancerre. The ease with which these soils accumulate heat contributes to the rapid ripening of the grapes. The wines of this terroir have a serious character and a weighty minerality, while being more open at a young age. In 2011, the Domaine received organic certification, and since 2012 it has also been biodynamically certified, becoming the third certified biodynamic winery in Sancerre.
