Interesting Facts
The grapes for Vrede Chardonnay ("peaceful Chardonnay") are grown on a northeast-facing slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, with rocky, clay-rich shale soil. Extreme southerly winds in September contributed to low yields at the Vrede vineyard—just 22.5 hl/ha. The harvest took place earlier than usual, resulting in a wine with a lower alcohol content than usual, with excellent fruitiness, depth, and balance. The wine was aged in 228-liter barriques for 11 months.
