Meerlust Estate
The first owner of the property, a German immigrant named Henning Huising, was inspired by the beauty and potential of the farm and settled here in 1693. He named his new home Meerlust, meaning "sea of pleasure". In 1975, Nico Myburgh produced the first wine under the Meerlust name, which won a trophy at the South African Wine Show. Today, the company is headed by the eighth generation of the Myburgh family, Hannes Myburgh, who has dedicated himself to the art of winemaking. In 2007, Hannes received the Verona Plaque of Honour, which is awarded to individuals whose contribution to the wine industry has been significant at an international level. Meerlust is located fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch. The wines are produced only from grapes grown on the estate, which has a unique location, providing the wines with exceptional complexity and expressive character. In summer, ocean breezes and evening fogs sweep in from the coast, cooling the vineyards and allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The soils here are well drained, giving the vines excellent drought tolerance and ideal substrates for producing concentrated, complex wines.
