Château d'Issan
Château d'Issan is located in the village of Cantenac, its history dates back to the 12th century. Guyenne (a historical province in the southwest of France) was occupied by England. At that time, the Margaux region was divided into two domains: Motte-Margaux (actually Château Margaux) and Motte-Cantenac (Château d'Issan). Then the knight Essenault built the castle of Issan, which is known today and is a historical monument. In 1855, the estate was awarded the title of 3-em Grand Cru Classe.
The wines of Château d'Issan have always been famous for their excellence, they were revered by famous people. These wines were served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet. Château d'Issan was the favorite wine of Emperor Franz Joseph. The motto of the estate is: "For royal tables and altars of the Gods."
Like many Bordeaux estates, Château d'Issan was destroyed after the First World War. Today, the castle is owned by the prestigious Cruz family, who bought it in 1950. The vineyards have been largely replanted and the estate has been restored to its former glory.
Chateau d'Issan has 120 hectares of land, 50 hectares of which are devoted to vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are used to produce the great wine of Château d'Issan and the second wine Blason d'Issan. These varieties produce traditional Margaux wines with the strength of Pauillac.
