Domaine De Chevalier
Domaine de Chevalier is one of the best estates in Pessac-Leognan. In the classification of wines from the Grave appellation in 1953 and 1959, the wines of the estate were included in the Crus Classes. Domaine de Chevalier is located in the commune of Leognan, 17 km south of Bordeaux, it is one of several Bordeaux estates called Domaine instead of Château ("Domaine" is most often found in Burgundy). The origins of Domaine de Chevalier can be traced back to 1763, to which evidenced by a map of the region drawn by Pierre de Bellaime. The land at that time belonged to a certain Chibaley or Chivaley, which meant “knight” in the Gascon dialect, he produced about 13,500 liters of wine per year.
The name "Chivaley" itself is believed to be associated with the old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, which still borders the estate. One of the things that makes Chevalier unique is the way the domaine achieved prominence in a relatively short period of time, compared to most of the great Bordeaux producers, who took several centuries to achieve similar status.
