Akilia
Akilia Wines is one of 30 small winemaking projects that have emerged in Bierzo in the last 10 years. The name Akilia comes from the Latin aquilias, meaning eagle. The Romans called the local mountains Aquilan because of the large number of birds that lived there. Akilia Wines was created with the intention of restoring old vineyards of local varieties such as Mencia. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Aquilan Mountains (also known as Montes de El Bierzo), part of the Montes de Leon massif, and are strongly influenced by their variable climate. The work in the vineyard is carried out with full respect for all biological processes, an approach that can be called “rational”. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and the harvest date depends on the phenolic maturity of each part of the individual vineyard. Each plot is vinified separately in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The wine is aged in concrete tanks, steel, or in French barrels of 225, 228 and 300 liters. All wines are produced and matured in his "garage" with an annual production volume of 15,000 bottles, but with the potential to produce up to 40,000 bottles.
