Matias Morcos
Morcos is located in eastern Mendoza. The vineyards here grow at altitudes ranging from 1,600 to 2,300 feet above sea level in the desert, about 90 miles east of the capital. Today, the estate is run by Matias Marcos, continuing a family business that was founded in the 1950s as a cooperative by Lebanese immigrants who planted the first vineyards in eastern Mendoza using the Italian Pergola system. Matias is restoring the 100-year-old winery in Barriales, Junin, Mendoza, in an effort to preserve the ancient style of winemaking, using old concrete aging tanks. The winery’s doors are open to small growers in the region who make their own wines with Marcos’ help, avoiding the unfair prices their grapes command on the market.
