Loxarel
The Loxarel vineyards are located in the DO Penedes wine-growing area, which is located on the coast between the cities of Barcelona and Tarragona. In 1985, Josep Mitjans, at the age of 16, made his first 1,000 bottles of sparkling wine. Before that, four generations of the family engaged in viticulture had produced bulk wines on the estate. Josep trained as an oenologist and began to transform the family business. In 1987, he registered the Loxarel brand, which plays on the name of the iconic xarel lo (Xarel-lo) variety.
In 2002, Loxarel decided to develop organic agriculture. Since 2005, they have been using biodynamic principles. The estate is committed to finding the right relationship between man and the land, using, among other things, green pruning with the herd, natural fertilizers prepared using its own system, and the lunar calendar and astrology as a guide when working with the harvest. For the vinification of the key variety Xarelò, the estate uses clay amphorae to reveal the mineral properties of the variety and its potential for aging.
