Loxarel vineyards are located in the DO Penedes wine zone, which is located on the coast between the cities of Barcelona and Tarragona.
In 1985, Josep Mitjans made his first 1000 bottles of sparkling wine at the age of 16. Until this 4th generation of the family involved in viticulture, producing the estate wines balkove. Josep Mitjans was educated as an oenologist and started transforming the family business.
In 1987, he registered the brand Loxarel, which plays with the name of a landmark for the economy of the varieties xarel·lo (Xarello).
In 2002, Loxarel decided to develop ecological agriculture. Since 2005, the principles of biodynamics have been applied. The economy professes to search for the right relationship between man and the earth, using, among other things:
- production restrictions
- green pruning with the help of a herd
- natural fertilizers prepared using our own system
- lunar calendar and astrology as a guide when working with the harvest
For vinification of the key variety of Sharello, the farm uses clay amphorae to demonstrate the mineral properties of the variety and reveal its potential for aging
In recent years, the farm has been intensively working on the production of natural wines with controlled fermentation. In an effort to preserve as much as possible the work done in the vineyards, wines are produced using simple processes with minimal intervention and the minimum possible addition of chemical or synthetic products
The desire of Josep Mitjans to innovate and experiment has led to the fact that over the past ten years, a rare variety has appeared on the farm - red charello (Xarel·lo Vermell or Xarello Rojo) with a skin the color of an onion skin.
