Marziano Abbona

The estate was founded in 1970 by Celso Abbona, who believed in the special potential of the Dolcetto variety in the lands near the town of Dogliani. Abbona owns 45 hectares of vineyards and rents 6 hectares in the Barolo area. The company produces about 250,000 bottles per year. The current owner, Marziano Abbona, president of the Dogliani DOCG winemakers association, created the wine "Papa Celso" from his beloved Dolcetto in memory of his father.

Particularly noteworthy is the oenologist of the Abbona winery - Giuseppe "Beppe" Caviola. In 2002, he was awarded the title of Winemaker of the Year by Gambero Rosso, his unofficial title is "King of Dolcetto", received for his love and successful work with this variety. Caviola graduated from the oenological school in Alba - one of the best educational centers for future winemakers in Piedmont.

Abbona wines are fermented to extract the best colour and avoid harsh tannins. Malolactic fermentation is started early to soften the wine and give it a distinct fruity character. Aging takes place in Slovenian and French oak barrels of various sizes.

All Abbona wine labels are designed by a family friend, Gianni Gallo. They feature bird species that can be found in the vineyards.
