Boekenhoutskloof

Founded in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of the oldest farms located in the upper valley in the foothills of the Franschhoek. Mark Kent is a winemaker, cellar keeper, and part-owner of this estate and farm.

Boekenhoutskloof, a Franschhoek winery, instantly gained fame with its first Syrah (1997). Boekenhoutskloof has developed a more affordable second line, the Porcupine Ridge (Porcupine Pass). The core wine line - which includes the magnificent Sémillon produced in tiny quantities - was specifically created based on Kent's own preferences, grape availability and his desire to focus on Franschhoek.

Some of the grapes for the Boekenhoutskloof line are purchased, as their vineyards are still too young and do not bear fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon comes from its own estates on the river bank in Franschhoek (from where Semillon comes from). Shiraz is purchased from vineyards located in the Wine of Origin area.

Mark Kent joined Boekenhoutskloof in 1994 and is currently the seventh partner in this well-known company. Mark travels frequently to France, where he studies the French winemaking tradition, from which he draws inspiration for the style and philosophy of his own winemaking.

The Boekenhoutskloof, and in particular Mark Kent, produces "world-class wines that combine the power and maturity of the new world with the elegance and precision of the old."
